Google Search Tips
1 June 2007

There are several ways to make the results more specific. But this is one and easiest way to make specific results. The tip is to use a Colon in the search. There are four which I’m going to mention today which are terms in site, file types, definition, and media and songs search. But since search results are so good we sometimes think that these kinds of things aren’t useful. But just give it a try on the tips shown below:
To Search for Terms in Specific Site:
“site:” + URL + search term. example: site:www.gadget9.com Wireless. This is how you should search if you want to search for the term ‘Wireless’ in gadget9.com. And some results have shown that if you remove ‘www.‘ then your search will be more specific. Or you can even drop the domain name, just search like ‘.gov’ instead of ‘gadget9.com’ and by the side just enter the search term.
To Search for Definition of a Word:
“define:” + word. example: define: Blog. This will show the definition of the word Blog which is from several reliable source and not from Google itself. Some words might have many definition while some might have only one. It can also translate the word.
To Search for File from Specific File Type:
“filetype:” + file extension + file names or topic. example: filetype:PPT Blogging Tips. This search would result in all Powerpoint Presentation in the topic or file name which has the the term Blogging Tips. You can replace the PPT with DOC, PDF, RAR, etc. But for media then you will need a different search term.
To Search for Songs or Media or Even PDF files:

“intitle:”index.of”” + (mp3|mp4|avi) + Song Name or Title + -htm -html -php - cf -asp -jsp. example: intitle:”index.of” (mp3|mp4|avi) Akon -htm -html -php -asp -jsp -cf. This search means to search for Akon with only files mp3, mp4 or avi results and not to show any htm, html, php, asp, jsp, cf pages. So these results will be straight into the directory of the file and you can download it. The image of the results are shown below and also the video demonstration of how to search.
