USB Thumbdrive from China
17 June 2007
![]()
Some guy went to China and bought this USB Drive at a cheap price. It was supposed to be able to store several gigabytes of memory. But as much as he tried, it didn’t work. So he decided to open it up and that’s what he saw. So please, if you go to China or are planning to, always try the things you buy. But I think it will be hard to return stuff once you bought it. In case you don’t know, the wire inside is the extension cord of USB gadgets. How did they even think of doing this?

Thanks for the tip,
I’m going to china too and all I keep hearing is stuff like this so I have decided to only buy clearly labelled new stuff even if its more expensive than the same box around the corner.

you just have to prove that you arent a retarded, rich, foreigner… also, bargain like a mad man, you honestly wont offend them. Yell at them.
I lived there for quiet a while and at our local Electronics market I always got good deals and wasnt really ever ripped off, but I did see alot of other foreigners get ripped off.
good luck.

When I was in China I had a (semi)local colleague with me who helped me do all the shopping / bargaining. All the (cheap) gadgets I bought are still working perfectly after 2 years. Half of the things I bought in the US when I went there last year had ‘Made in China’ written on them.
I think last-minute tourist shoppers have a big “rob me” written on their forehead, and the shops there probably have a special inventory just for such people.

Being a Chinese myself, I know how insecure any foreigner living in China must feel considering the amount of fake stuff you come across. But, like some people have mentioned, get gadgets are real stores, like Creative stores, that actually sell real stuff. Maybe they don’t have discounts, but after you live there for a while and get to know what stores are reliable, you won’t have a problem.
This is probably why people around the world are prejudiced against “Made in China” stuff. Salespeople have kept telling me (not knowing I’m Chinese) that this or that is not made in China! (I’m living in Thailand.) It’s made in Mexico! Original quality! …. Well I guess you really have to look at the brand AND the store. Large-scale retailers are less likely to rip people off (of course, duh).
Be careful though. Not all Chinese dealers are bad, but perhaps many are. Fraud happens anywhere. You name it: China, U.S., Russia, U.K., and all the other big names. Different kinds, different frequency. Low-cost merchandise–maybe you should check your motive too! A few more dollars could worth the security of buying in a good store.

My god, I wonder are they selling this stuff to locals also.
on July 20th, 2007 at 11:51 pm
You just can’t beat these guys for innovation.
I bought a USB key “on sale” not too long ago that didn’t work. On a lark, I opened it up and found a chip and some other stuff along with a circuit board. Looks like the Chinese have found a way to duplicate the same functionality with fewer (and cheaper) components! This can only mean good news for consumers since this will ultimately bring prices down

LESTER… Don’t think you can put nasty racist material on here just cos some guys been ripped off. I’ll have you removed from this site if i can.

as a Chinese im shock with it as well, but im highly self-confident that such things is rare in our country, and such seller could exist just in a short term in the market, after that they were definitely punished by appropriate bureau. By the way i want to say that the most traveler wont be cheated, because such swindler or such counterfeit are obviously detected. im kindly expected that you have a good impression during your travel in China.

ABSOLUTELY! I hate it when people do things that make their own country look bad like that - only jerks like that person would do that and I think china’s a wonderful country, being a canadian myself…

well..
why did you buy it, is it just because its cheap?
you should be more caution.
but maybe the economic condition there force them to do such a thing…
on March 22nd, 2008 at 2:55 am
well, IMHO.. doin stuff like shouting racism over such a matter, is clearly unacceptable. not that racism is ever appropriate, anyways.
the way i see it, its more to being funny. sure, the guy who bought the thumbdrive did lose a few bucks (not much im sure). but maybe he did get a few laugh out of it, after all. i mean, it certainly is unexpected, right?
well, now that i have got the chance to know such thing could actually happen, i’ll make sure to be really careful. especially when it involves money that is not so little in amount
