Tips: Easiest Way to Block Certain Websites
23 October 2007

Parents might have several problem with their kids spending too much time on MySpace, Facebook, Orkut or other sites. There are actually several ways to block a site, but we are going to demonstrate the easiest way as there are lots of non-techie parents out there as well. But before we go straight into blocking websites I would suggest that you talk to your child about it first, and ask them to lessen the amount of time on those personal details sharing sites. Several other ways to stop your child from accessing those websites are:
- Place the Computer in the Living Room where you can monitor most of his/her computing activities
- Check their histories in the sites they access
- Tell them about the danger of sharing personal details online
And if none of those works or you want to just block the website then follow this two steps:
Step 1.
Click on ‘Start‘ button on the bottom-left of the screen and choose ‘Run‘
Then type in the following phrase:
notepad c:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Step 2.
A notepad file should open up. Then go to the last line of the codes in the notepad where there is 127.0.0.1 localhost
Then add the following codes:
127.0.0.1 myspace.com
127.0.0.1 facebook.com
127.0.0.1 orkut.com
and any other sites just add it after 127.0.0.1
And Don’t Forget to SAVE the file before exit.

After:

And now those site should be blocked. And if you want to unblock those site then just follow the Step 1 and delete the codes that you have added. But don’t think this will help on every kids as some of them will figure out the way to unblock the website.
