Advanced Info Service (AIS) along with Singapore Telecom (SingTel) and Australia Operator Optus are in talks with Apple over the topic of bringing in iPhones to their regions. Apple has promised that iPhone will be in Asia by 2008 although lots of them has already been smuggled in the region. AIS, the largest phone service provider in Thailand, has been in talks with Apple for several months over the topic of iPhone. AIS reported that Apple has asked the operators to sell the mobile along with a postpaid plan and share revenue with Apple. AIS, SingTel and Optus are still discussing the phone volumes, marketing terms and business model partnerships.

“Given our one baht a minute of airtime, it would not make sense and would be impossible for us to share revenue with Apple,” said Mr. Sanchai, the cheif marketing officer of AIS. He also added that 90% of Thai mobile-users are using prepaid.

Reports have been said that over 60,000 iPhones have been smuggled into Thailand and being sold at around $650 each instead of the $399 which is the original price in US.
